Mikko Mönkkönen is the PI of ForTran. He is professor in applied ecology. His research of forest biodiversity and ecosystem services reveals possibilities to reconcile economically effective timber production with societally and ecologically sustainable use of forests. Mikko is a member of the Expert Panel for Sustainable Development.
Sirpa Tenhunen is an anthropologist, and her contribution to ForTran draws from her expertise in the ethnographic method as well as in environmental anthropology, innovations, and technology studies.
Minna Halme is professor of sustainability management at Aalto University School of Business. Her research focuses on cross-sector co-creation of sustainable business models, and she has studied environmental management paradigm shifts in the forest industry.
Professor Teppo Hujala has expertise in participatory futures research, forest owner studies, sustainability assessments, and qualitative analysis. His earlier research combines viewpoints of policies, businesses, and publicly funded services.
Kyle Eyvindson is an expert in forest planning and will focus on identifying forest management solutions that can harmonize the diverse needs and perspectives of stakeholders. His expertise will steer the construction and application of data-driven methods to identify a range of win-win and compromise planning solutions.
Johanna Yletyinen provides expertise for ForTran in resilience, social-ecological systems, and sustainable natural resource management. She develops and employs innovative approaches for studying social-ecological systems as complex adaptive systems, usually based on network science. Yletyinen holds a Ph.D. in Natural Resource Management and a Title of Docent in Environmental Science. Her research is deeply rooted in sustainability science and resilience thinking.
Sini Suomalainen leads the interaction work package in ForTran. She is your contact point for different forms of cooperation with NGOs, public sector and companies, media inquiries and policy implications.
Daniel Burgas Riera (Ph.D., Senior researcher) is a sustainability scientist who has been conducting interdisciplinary research in the use of forest resources including studies on, e.g., forest policy coherence, management impacts on ecosystem services, or information tools to facilitate sustainability transitions. As the research coordinator of ForTran, he is responsible for nurturing interaction among researchers within and outside ForTran.
Anni Karhu works on the ForTran project as a project coordinator. She supports with administrative project management issues such as reporting, procurement, financial monitoring, and project reporting.
Claudia Kovács has expertise in the areas of sustainability and financial management of business. In her master’s thesis, Claudia has studied methods for assessing the biodiversity impacts of business for financing sustainability transitions and solutions to biodiversity loss. She also has practical experience related to innovative climate solutions and business models from projects in impact investing.
Dr. Adriano Mazziotta is an expert in forest ecology and modelling and in ForTran explores the capacity of the forest to maintain multifunctionality. He has expertise in forest simulations and scenario analysis to develop multi-objective forest planning. He is experienced in evaluating synergies and trade-offs between biodiversity, timber production and other ecosystem services.
Martta Nieminen is a doctoral researcher and her area of interest is regenerative organizing in forestry and the human-nonhuman collaboratory work that regeneration requires. She will use the posthuman approach which aims at acknowledging the agencies of nonhuman beings.
Dr. Kaisa J. Raatikainen is a sustainability scientist with a multidisciplinary background. In ForTran, her research provides insight into effective ways to support sustainable use of forests, both under current context but also within visionary future scenarios.
Anna Repo applies methods from systems analysis, forest sciences and ecology to socio-ecological systems to guide transition towards sustainable and resilient forestry that operates within ecological limits. She has expertise in forest modelling, climate impact assessment, policy analyses, and ecosystem service and biodiversity modelling. She holds a degree of Doctor of Science (Tech.) in Systems analysis and Operations Research, and a master’s degree in Environmental Science.
Jelena Salmi is a postdoctoral researcher in anthropology. She has expertise in using ethnographic methods to understand and explore human experiences and perceptions of policy and environmental change.
Mari Selkimäki is an environmental scientist, her key research areas are land use change, renewable energy and forest planning. In the project, she participates in multi-objective forest planning.
Tuomo Takala has expertise in forest policy research, forest owner research and ecology. In this project, he analyses policy tools needed in just green transition.
